April 27, 2015 (SPRINGFIELD, Ill.) H. D. Smith was recently honored as a “Good as Gold Business” by University of Illinois Springfield (UIS). This distinction recognizes Springfield businesses that support volunteerism, encourages employees to serve in the community, organizes service efforts, and/or financially supports the efforts of nonprofits and charitable organizations.

“H. D. Smith has a rich heritage tied to the Springfield community, with charitable giving part of the H. D. Smith culture,” said Chris Smith, president and CEO, H. D. Smith. “My father instilled giving into the associates he worked with and that tradition continues today. The H. D. Smith Foundation matches associate donations to any charitable organization and the United Way is one the entire organization supports to make Springfield a better place to live and work.”

The Good as Gold Ceremony was established in 2009 to recognize the spirit and achievements of local volunteers and nonprofit organizations. The ceremony is a joint effort between the UIS Volunteer & Civic Engagement Center, the Junior League of Springfield and the United Way of Central Illinois.

In 2014, the Good as Gold Awards Ceremony, for the first time, recognized Springfield businesses that support volunteer efforts and charitable giving through the Good as Gold Business Honor Roll.

H. D. Smith Event Marketing Coordinator Melissa Campbell accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
