Fight Mandatory Mail Waste and Dispose of Unused Medication

By the National Community Pharmacists Association

Research has shown that mandatory mail creates 3.3 times more waste than retail pharmacies. To help build a stronger case against mail order waste, consider participating in the Prescription Disposal Program from the National Community Pharmacists Association. NCPA has launched this voluntary program for pharmacies that want to help their patients dispose of unused and expired medications during the 40thanniversary of Earth Week, April 17-24, 2010.

Patients returning medications to participating pharmacies will be asked to complete a very brief questionnaire identifying the source of the unused medications, such as mail order and the reasons for disposal. This data collection will be critical in the public policy fights NCPA makes on behalf of community pharmacy.

Interested pharmacies can receive a discounted Sharps disposal container for as little as $55. In addition, NCPA member pharmacies will have access to free marketing and press materials for community promotion and will be featured on a pharmacy locator on a new national consumer website.

For more information or to order materials, visit the NCPA website or contact Valerie Briggs at . Some limitations may apply.
