Desert Pharmacy opened its doors in early 2012.

Though the business previously existed for twelve years in the Bermuda Dunes, California community, with new ownership, leadership and name, it is destine for success. Co-founder Allan Nyman, R.Ph., MBA has come out of semi-retirement to help drive the venture. Allan was a part-time pharmacist for the previous owner. “The pharmacy didn’t close for lack of business.” said Allan. “I saw the possibilities.” Allan is no stranger to the world of pharmacy, having previously owned eight stores.
The possibilities are indeed great for Desert Pharmacy. Positioned in a rapidly expanding medical clinic, the pharmacy will service patients of the urgent care, pediatric and family practice offices, as well as the general community. Featuring prescription services, a modest front-end, free delivery and warm service, the pharmacy is maximizing its current 650 square foot location. “With Desert Pharmacy, you’re going to work with a person who cares.” Allan shared. “We also have a bi-lingual staff to match the demographics of our community.”
The previous owner had partnered with H. D. Smith, but like any sharp business man, Allan wanted to explore his options for a wholesale partner. “We initially thought of doing business with a larger company.” said Allan. “Our initial contact efforts left us with the opinion that we didn’t want to do business with those organizations after all.” Changing tactics, Allan and his associates reached out to H. D. Smith. “The response was very exciting and comforting, especially in comparison to the other wholesalers.”
H. D. Smith’s California Division dispatched Consumer Products Specialist Larry Owen to help the pharmacy strategize and merchandise its front end. “We don’t really have a lot of space, but Larry has done well with what we have.” said Allan. “For two days he came in and worked. When he was here, he was totally focused on us; he wasn’t getting or making calls. He was all business - efficient and experienced. It was a pleasure working with him.”
Desert Pharmacy is also pleased with their sales representative, Rich Hughes. “He has taken us by the hand and walked us through the transition.” described Allan. “I feel comfortable with H. D. Smith – the entire team is accessible. H. D. Smith’s programs and people make starting the business much less daunting.”
In search of operational solutions, Desert Pharmacy is also working closely with H. D. Smith’s Third Party Network. “We’re looking to the Third Party Network for guidance in setting up a line of communication with the insurance companies.” Allan said.
The vision the Desert Pharmacy partners share has created a powerful business model. Never content to let the dust settle, the Desert Pharmacy team is already strategizing next steps. “We’re going to offer compounding.” Allan said. “We’re starting from scratch, but feel it will be an excellent adjunct.” In addition, within twelve to eighteen months, the pharmacy will move to a location that will more than triple its square footage.
Though the relationship is relatively new, Allan affirms the decision to select with H. D. Smith. “We are partners.” he remarked. The H. D. Smith team agrees and is dedicated to supporting Desert Pharmacy in its future endeavors.
