Henry Dale Smith
Henry Dale Smith founded H. D. Smith in January 1954. While no longer running the day to day operations of the business, Henry Dale remains active as the Chairman Emeritus.
Since early in his career, Henry Dale has always had a deep commitment to the industry. He is a Pharmacist by trade, with a B.S. in Chemistry from The Citadel and a B.S. in Pharmacy from UNC Chapel Hill. For decades, he has been a member of the National Wholesale Druggists Association (NWDA) and was a regular attendee at national and regional meetings. In 1973 he joined the NWDA Pharmaceutical Marketing Committee, serving as its Chairman in 1975. From 1984 to 1986 Henry Dale served on the NWDA Board of Directors. He was a member of the Marion CEO Club, and was recognized as having “evidenced sincere interest in the progress of the pharmaceutical industry” by Marion in April 1989. In 1993 Henry Dale served on the Amgen Wholesale Advisory Board.
In addition, in 2003 Henry Dale received the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement. Throughout the years and still today, vendors, customers, and association executives have sought his counsel on a wide range of industry and business matters.
Henry Dale Smith, Jr.
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Dale Smith is chairman and CEO of H. D. Smith. Under his leadership, H. D. Smith has grown from a regional wholesaler to a national wholesaler with distribution centers spanning from coast to coast. Dale leads the company’s commitment to providing unique, best-in-class service and solutions that aid retail pharmacies, regional chains, health systems and alternate care facilities in cost-containment opportunities, enhancing efficiencies, and helping to maximize patient outcomes.
As the leader of the company, Dale has piloted H. D. Smith into greater partnerships with manufacturers, of which one result was the creation of H. D. Smith Specialty Solutions. This organization is structured to provide focus and alignment around specialty and traditional brand products, solutions and services.
He previously served as vice chairman and president of the J M Smith Corporation, the company his grandfather founded. He cofounded and chaired Wholesale Alliance, LLC from 1997 to 2005, a cooperative focused on helping pharmacies provide clinical services.
Currently Dale is a member of the HDMA Board of Directors and is a member of its Executive Committee. He has chaired and served on various committees and advisory boards within the industry during his career, including HDMA’s Government and Public Policy Council and the Industry Relations Council.
In 2005, Dale was named the Illinois winner of the Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Health Services/Life Sciences category. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award was created by Ernst & Young and recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic and growing businesses. Ernst & Young presents its annual Entrepreneur of the Year Award to the most successful and innovative entrepreneurial business leaders in more than 30 countries around the globe.
Dale holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Davidson College.
J. Christopher Smith
President and Chief Operating Officer
Chris Smith, with his many years of management experience, currently serves as the president and chief operating officer of H. D. Smith. Chris joined H. D. Smith in 1980 and advanced through several positions at the Illinois Division. In 2002, while Chris was serving as the division president of H. D. Smith’s Illinois Division, it received the company’s coveted Division of the Year Award.
Throughout his career, Chris has served on numerous industry boards and committees, including the HDMA Board of Directors and currently serves as the chairman of the HDMA Industry Relations Council. Chris has also served on the Pharmaceutical Marketing Committee of NWDA and the HDMA Performance and Trends Committee, chairing that committee from 2001 to 2002.
Chris is actively involved with various community boards and committees, including chairing the Memorial Medical Center Foundation Board and serving on the Pharmacy Advisory Board for the SIU Edwardsville School of Pharmacy. He is also currently involved in the Springfield Luncheon Optimist Club and has served in various capacities including member, board member, vice president and president. Formerly, Chris served on the Central Illinois Community Blood Center board of directors and as Chairman of the Kumler Neighborhood Ministries.
Chris holds a master’s degree in management from the J. L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Illinois. He is also a 1992 graduate of the Dale Carnegie course.
Executive Vice President Human Resources
As executive vice president of human resources, Karen Callaway provides overall strategic leadership to the company. She oversees the development and implementation of human resources policies, programs and services. This includes recruitment, selection, retention, legal complaints, benefits, associate relations, employment practices and procedures and associate communications. As a member of the Executive Leadership Team, she offers expertise on personnel issues that affect performance and business relationships.
Karen has more than 30 years’ experience in human resources, recruitment, public relations and marketing. She joined H. D. Smith in 2004 and most recently served as corporate vice president human resources.
She has a master’s degree in organizational studies from the University of Illinois, Springfield, and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Sangamon State University. Karen also holds professional certification as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
President H. D. Smith Specialty Solutions
As president of the newly created H.D. Smith Specialty Solutions, Joe Conda directs the company’s specialty solutions which include Smith Medical Partners and the joint venture, Triplefin. He oversees supervision and budget responsibility for both organizations’ operations, including sales, general corporate and liability insurance and security and regulatory compliance.
Joe, a 40-year industry veteran, most recently served as senior vice president of strategic planning and business development for H.D. Smith. He is a well-known and respected figure in the healthcare distribution and packaging industries. During his career, he has helped numerous companies enhance their market share and position through the development and implementation of strategic planning initiatives.
His previous experiences include serving as executive consultant for strategic planning and execution to several pharmaceutical, consumer packaging and medical technology companies. He also served as president of Owens Illinois Healthcare Packaging, as well as serving in almost all key operational and executive leadership roles for Owens Illinois Prescription Products. Prior to Owens, Joe held sales and marketing executive roles at Brockway.
In 1998, he was awarded the HDMA Foundation Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement. He has also received the 2010 Harold W. Pratt award in recognition of his efforts to improve the practice of pharmacy within the chain drug industry.
A graduate of Rutgers University, Joe holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and marketing. He also has a finance certificate from the Darden School of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.
Joe serves as a member of the Bowling Green State University Foundation Board, Bowling Green, Ohio, where he is chairman of the investment committee and co-chairman of the University Joint Investment Committee. He also serves as president of the board of trustees for Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
Chief Information Officer
David Guzmán is Chief Information Officer for H. D. Smith. In this role, David is responsible for developing and implementing information technology initiatives to enhance the customer experience as well as to advance H. D. Smith’s supply-chain and cost-management systems.
David, an information technology (IT) veteran with nearly 30 years service at Fortune 500 companies in finance, retail, consumer-product and health-service industries, joined H. D. Smith in 2011 from Acxiom, one of the country’s largest information-service providers. There, he held the position of Chief Information and Technology Officer.
David has previously served at the Chief Information Officer-level at a number of technology, healthcare and retail giants including Acxiom, Owens & Minor and Office Depot. Managing multi-million dollar information technology system budgets, improving service while reducing related expenses, he understands the nexus between economics and service. At Owens & Minor, David oversaw the development of revenue-generating platforms and services for hospital customers that helped the Company grow to an $8 billion dollar healthcare distribution business. David twice led Owens & Minor to #1 on the InfoWeek 500 roster.
Chief Financial Officer
As Chief Financial Officer, Bill Williams leads H. D. Smith’s financial strategy, directing all financial functions, including planning, reporting, forecasting, tax planning, as well as banking and treasury operations. Wielding extensive executive financial, strategic and operational leadership, Bill is experienced with both publicly and privately held companies. He has a proven track record of guiding organizations and strengthening financial and business performance.
Bill has served as a Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and a Management Consultant for companies in the chemicals, distribution, automotive, consumer products, technology and financial services sectors. He has held executive and corporate officer roles in finance, strategy and operations at several leading global corporations, including Kraft Foods, AlliedSignal, Steelcase, Martin Brower Company (the largest McDonald’s Corporation distributor in the Americas), as well as provided financial advisory and shareholder value management consulting services as a senior vice president at Stern Stewart & Co., a NY-based financial consultancy.
Bill obtained his JD from DePaul University, where he is completing his LLM in International Law. He earned his MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business with a specialization in Finance. He holds an undergraduate degree is in business and a CPA from Northern Illinois University.
Senior Vice President Category Management
As senior vice president of category management, Bob Appleby is responsible for implementing company strategy to enhance sales and profits through vendor relationships in coordination with H. D. Smith’s sales, marketing and purchasing departments. He drives the development and implementation of programs, services and other business solutions to meet the company’s gross margin and profit objectives, while offering our customers an outstanding value.
Bob most recently served as corporate vice president of prescription products for H. D. Smith, where he was responsible for managing the company’s prescription pharmaceutical business. He has more than 16 years’ of domestic and international business development, sales, marketing and strategic finance experience with two Fortune 500 companies and a Big Four accounting firm. Bob previously served at Cardinal Health as vice president of customer development.
A graduate of Drexel University, he holds a master’s degree of business administration. He also has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ohio State University.
Executive Vice President Commercial Solutions
As executive vice president of commercial solutions, Tom Doyle leads the commercialization teams across Smith Medical Partners (SMP) and Triplefin to benefit customers throughout the pharmaceutical supply chain for key products, services and market segments. His efforts accelerate the value of the combined resources of SMP.
Tom served first as director and most recently, as vice president of new business development for Smith Medical Partners, a wholly owned subsidiary of H.D. Smith. He has more than 25 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, in both brand and distribution companies. Tom’s roles have ranged from directing trade and U.S. commercial operations, leading 3M’s Canadian pharmaceutical business unit to business development, and strategic planning.
A Six Sigma Black Belt, he was selected to participate in the 3M Advanced Leadership Development Program. He holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, MI.
Corporate Vice President Consumer Products
Bob Dynek is Corporate Vice President Consumer Products at H. D. Smith, serving as the executive in charge for the Home Healthcare (HHC) and Health, Beauty and Wellness (HBW) categories. Bob drives the Company’s strategy in these areas through collaboration with sales leadership, vendor and customer relationships, distribution centers and purchasing. Through this cooperation, Bob leads the implementation and evolution of programs, services and solutions to offer our customers an outstanding value and service.
Bob leverages over 30 years of industry experience in Category Management, Supply Chain, Merchandising, Sales and Sale Management with companies including General Drug Company, Foxmeyer Corporation and Louis Zahn Drug Company. In his over 15 years at H. D. Smith, he has held positions in Brand Rx Category Management and has led the Purchasing, Trade Relations and Master Data departments.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce from DePaul University.
Corporate Vice President Drug Divisions East
As Corporate Vice President, Drug Divisions East, Christian Herrington is responsible for profit and loss, sales leadership, project management and operations in H. D. Smith’s Eastern Region divisions located in
Christian joined H. D. Smith in 2001 as Vice President of Sales. From 2008 to 2011, Christian served as Vice President Division Manager of H. D. Smith’s New England Division. Under his leadership, the division earned the esteemed H. D. Smith Division of the Year honor in 2010. Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Christian held roles of increasing responsibility at Bindley Western, first as Division Sales Manager and then as National Director of Retail Sales. When Bindley Western was acquired by Cardinal Health, Christian became National Director of Customer Integration.

Corporate Vice President Product Development and Architecture
Mark Mehmet is responsible for leading product development to support business initiatives. He leads production teams from initial inception to final product, as well as identifies and proposes new information technologies and systems to improve business processes and decision making.
A 30+-year information technology veteran, Mark’s experience has included vice president of enterprise applications for Knowledge Universe, vice president of e-commerce and application architecture for Office Depot and director-level positions with Chico’s, Alcoa and Kmart.
He holds a master of business administration from Wayne State University, with a double concentration in information systems and finance. His bachelor’s degree is from Detroit College of Business. At Michigan State University, he completed computer science curriculum. In addition, Mark is a Sun-certified enterprise architect, Java 1.1 programmer and programmer for Java 2 Platform.
Corporate Vice President Strategic Pricing
As a customer centric organization, offering the ‘right price’ to our customers is a key element of our business priorities. As H. D. Smith’s resident pricing expert, Harold leads the company’s strategy for product and service offering valuation. Through analytical and market strategy leadership, he guides the organization to optimal price levels, policies and processes.
Harold possesses an industry-wide reputation as a thought leader and change agent. With twenty years of experience in pricing strategy, strategic marketing and customer profitability, Harold’s insightful analysis is an asset to H. D. Smith and its customers.
Prior to joining the organization, Harold served as the first Vice President Strategic Pricing and Customer Profitability for Sarnova, Inc. He has also served as Vice President Strategic Pricing for Cardinal Health for over six years.
A graduate of University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Harold holds a Bachelors of Science with Highest Distinction in Business Administration, Finance. He previously served on the board of directors for the Institute of Internal Research Pricing (PRICEX) and has numerous speaker affiliations including PRICEX, Professional Pricing Society and leading Universities.
Harold D. Tamayo
Corporate Vice President Finance, Corporate Controller
As Corporate Vice President Finance, Corporate Controller, Harold is responsible for the Company’s accounting policies and systems; financial reporting; Financial Shared Services; internal financial controls; and tax, cash management and treasury operations. Harold also provides strategic financial advice and counsel to senior management.
Harold brings over 17 years of finance and healthcare experience to our organization. Prior to joining H. D. Smith, he served as Senior Director of Finance for Medco Health Solutions, as well as Head of Finance for Medco International Operations, with responsibilities for Europe and the UK. Prior to joining Medco, Harold spent 7 years with Novartis Pharma, where he served as Director of Finance and Accounting for U.S. manufacturing, Global Director of Finance for The Oncology Division and Regional Director of Finance for Latin America. He began his career as an analyst and later as Finance & Business Analysis Manager for Merck & Co. with headquarters in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey.
Harold holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from Florida International University, an MBA focused in Finance/Management and MSc in Operations from the University of Miami. He also completed post MBA studies in Corporate Finance at Indiana University Kelly School of Business.
Senior Vice President Supply Chain Management
Tom Twitty is responsible for overseeing all aspects of supply chain management, including operations, purchasing, regulatory and risk management for H. D. Smith and its subsidiaries. In this role, he develops a company supply chain strategy that achieves company strategy and meets company performance objectives.
Tom joined H. D. Smith in 2006 as vice president of operations. In his most recent role, corporate vice president, drug divisions west, he was responsible for profit and loss, sales leadership, project management and operations in H. D. Smith’s western region divisions.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, he worked as regional director of operations for Cardinal Health in Michigan. He is a graduate of The Ohio State University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration, majoring in production operations management and management information systems.
Corporate Vice President Marketing
Carolyn Webb leads H. D. Smith's development and implementation of the Company’s marketing, marketing services and government affairs strategies. Through the analysis of various industry developments and facets, Carolyn drives the development of innovative solutions. These programs continue to position H. D. Smith as a valuable partner with service and solution resources to advance our customers and trading partners.
With a proven record of developing innovative marketing programs and leading strategic engagements, Carolyn brings over 18 years of experience within the healthcare industry. She has served in a range of finance, sales, marketing and strategic planning roles for both the manufacturing and consulting industries. Carolyn joined H. D. Smith in 2010 as Director Brand Pharmaceuticals.
Carolyn earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Finance from the University of Michigan. She holds a Master of Business Administration in Marketing, Finance and Health Services Management from Northwestern University, the Kellogg School of Management.
Senior Vice President Drug Divisions
Scott Wilson is responsible for delivering the annual operating plan (AOP) net profit and sales goals for H. D. Smith’s wholesale drug divisions. In this role, Scott oversees all business functions within the wholesale drug divisions and executes AOP goals at each division.
In his most recent role, he served as corporate vice president of business transformation where he was responsible for large scale data enhancement programs. He joined H. D. Smith in 2006 as vice president of drug divisions. He leverages more than 20 years of leadership experience at the vice president, general manager and director levels. He held a leadership role in the integration of two merged Fortune 200 companies.
Scott has a B.B.A. in accounting from East Tennessee State University and served in the United States Air Force.
