
Henry Dale Smith
Chairman Emeritus
Henry Dale Smith founded H. D. Smith in January 1954. While no longer running the day to day operations of the business, Henry Dale remains active as the Chairman Emeritus.
Since early in his career, Henry Dale has always had a deep commitment to the industry. He is a Pharmacist by trade, with a B.S. in Chemistry from The Citadel and a B.S. in Pharmacy from UNC Chapel Hill. For decades, he has been a member of the National Wholesale Druggists Association (NWDA) and was a regular attendee at national and regional meetings. In 1973 he joined the NWDA Pharmaceutical Marketing Committee, serving as its Chairman in 1975. From 1984 to 1986 Henry Dale served on the NWDA Board of Directors. He was a member of the Marion CEO Club, and was recognized as having “evidenced sincere interest in the progress of the pharmaceutical industry” by Marion in April 1989. In 1993 Henry Dale served on the Amgen Wholesale Advisory Board.
In addition, in 2003 Henry Dale received the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) Nexus Award for Lifetime Achievement. Throughout the years and still today, vendors, customers, and association executives have sought his counsel on a wide range of industry and business matters.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer
Dale Smith is Chairman and CEO of H. D. Smith. Under his leadership, H. D. Smith has grown from a regional wholesaler to a national wholesaler with distribution centers spanning from coast to coast. Dale Smith leads the company’s commitment to providing unique, best in class service and solutions that aid retail pharmacies, regional chains, health systems and alternate care facilities in maximizing cost-containment opportunities and enhancing efficiencies. More than just product dispersal, Dale Smith is passionate about helping H. D. Smith customers care for the communities they serve by being a true advocate for and partner in their success.
Formerly, Dale served as the Vice Chairman and President of the J. M. Smith Corporation, the company his grandfather founded. Dale chaired Wholesale Alliance, LLC from 1997 – 2005. He has also served on various committees and advisory boards within the industry during his career, including the HDMA Government and Public Policy Council.
Dale was named the Illinois winner of the 2005 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Health Services/Life Sciences category. The Entrepreneur of the Year Award was created by Ernst & Young and recognizes outstanding entrepreneurs who are building and leading dynamic and growing businesses. Ernst & Young presents its annual Entrepreneur of the Year Award to the most successful and innovative entrepreneurial business leaders in more than 30 countries around the globe.
Dale holds a Bachelors degree from Davidson College.

J. Christopher Smith
President and Chief Operating Officer
Chris Smith, with his many years of management experience, currently serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer of H. D. Smith. Chris joined H. D. Smith in 1980 and most recently held the position of Executive Vice President.
Throughout his career, Chris has served on numerous industry boards and committees including his current involvement on the HDMA Board of Directors and the HDMA Industry Relations Council. Chris formerly served on the Pharmaceutical Marketing Committee of NWDA (1990-1992) and the HDMA Performance and Trends Committee (1998-2002, serving as Chairman of the Committee from 2001-2002).
Chris is actively involved with various community boards and committees including serving as Chair of the Memorial Medical Center Foundation Board and on the Pharmacy Advisory Board for the SIU Edwardsville School of Pharmacy. He is also currently involved in the Springfield Luncheon Optimist Club and has served in various capacities including member, board member, Vice President and President. Formerly, Chris served on the Central Illinois Community Blood Center Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Kumler Neighborhood Ministries.
In 2002, while Chris was serving as Division President, the Illinois Division received the coveted H. D. Smith Division of the Year Award.

David DuRoss
President, Smith Medical Partners
David DuRoss is President of Smith Medical Partners, H. D. Smith’s specialty subsidiary. In his role, Dave drives the strategy of Smith Medical Partners’ presence in the specialty pharmaceutical industry. Since onboarding in 2007, Dave has led Smith Medical Partners in achieving exponential growth with dynamic leadership in sales, finance, operations and regulatory compliance.
Dave wields over fifteen years of leadership and management experience in the specialty, institutional and managed care market segments. Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Dave served in a range of vice president and director roles in the specialty pharmaceutical industry, most recently at Medco/Accredo.
Dave earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio and pursued a Masters in Theology at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He holds a Masters of Business Administration with an emphasis in Finance from the University of Illinois, Chicago.

David Guzmán
Chief Information Officer
David Guzmán is Chief Information Officer for H. D. Smith. In this role, David is responsible for developing and implementing information technology initiatives to enhance the customer experience as well as to advance H. D. Smith’s supply-chain and cost-management systems.
David, an information technology (IT) veteran with nearly 30 years service at Fortune 500 companies in finance, retail, consumer-product and health-service industries, joined H. D. Smith in 2011 from Acxiom, one of the country’s largest information-service providers. There, he held the position of Chief Information and Technology Officer.
David has previously served at the Chief Information Officer-level at a number of technology, healthcare and retail giants including Acxiom, Owens & Minor and Office Depot. Managing multi-million dollar information technology system budgets, improving service while reducing related expenses, he understands the nexus between economics and service. At Owens & Minor, David oversaw the development of revenue-generating platforms and services for hospital customers that helped the Company grow to an $8 billion dollar healthcare distribution business. David twice led Owens & Minor to #1 on the InfoWeek 500 roster.

Bill Williams
Chief Financial Officer
As Chief Financial Officer, Bill Williams leads H. D. Smith’s financial strategy, directing all financial functions, including planning, reporting, forecasting, tax planning, as well as banking and treasury operations. Wielding extensive executive financial, strategic and operational leadership, Bill is experienced with both publicly and privately held companies. He has a proven track record of guiding organizations and strengthening financial and business performance.
Bill has served as a Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Operating Officer and a Management Consultant for companies in the chemicals, distribution, automotive, consumer products, technology and financial services sectors. He has held executive and corporate officer roles in finance, strategy and operations at several leading global corporations, including Kraft Foods, AlliedSignal, Steelcase, Martin Brower Company (the largest McDonald’s Corporation distributor in the Americas), as well as provided financial advisory and shareholder value management consulting services as a senior vice president at Stern Stewart & Co., a NY-based financial consultancy.
Bill obtained his JD from DePaul University, where he is completing his LLM in International Law. He earned his MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business with a specialization in Finance. He holds an undergraduate degree is in business and a CPA from Northern Illinois University.

Joe Conda
Senior Vice President Strategic Planning and Business Development
Joe Conda is Senior Vice President Strategic Planning and Business Development at H. D. Smith. Serving as the senior executive managing the Company’s strategic planning and business development efforts, Joe reports to the Chairman and CEO and is responsible for managing the Company’s strategic development process, translating opportunities into measurable objectives and assists senior executive leadership with long-term planning and business development.
Joe has more than 40 years of sales, marketing and executive leadership experience in the healthcare distribution and packaging sectors. In his executive leadership roles, Joe has helped companies develop and implement strategic planning programs, oversee day-to-day company operations to maximize efficiency and productivity, and direct strategic mergers and acquisitions to enhance company marketshare and position.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Joe served as an executive consultant for strategic planning and execution to pharmaceutical, consumer packaging and medical technology companies including Rexam PLC, Remind Cap International and Pulse Needle Free Systems. Previously, Joe served as President of Owens Illinois Healthcare Packaging where he directed operations for the business and the company’s strategic planning and execution efforts. At Owens Illinois Prescription Products, Joe served in almost all key operational and executive leadership roles, including Vice President, Corporate and Division Officer and Vice President, as well as VP General Manager, of Sales and Marketing.
Prior to Owens Illinois Prescription Products, Joe held sales and marketing executive roles at Brockway, including Vice President of Sales and Marketing and Vice President of General Sales. He also served as a product manager and sales representative for the company earlier in his career.

Bob Appleby
Corporate Vice President Prescription Products
Bob Appleby is Corporate Vice President Prescription Products at H. D. Smith. Serving as the senior executive managing the Company’s prescription Pharmaceutical business, Bob is responsible for driving the prescription pharmaceuticals division’s ongoing growth, managing manufacturer and customer relationships, implementing programs, services and other business solutions to meet customer expectations and business objectives.
Bob has more than 16 years of domestic and international business development, sales, marketing and strategic finance experience with two Fortune 500 companies and a Big Four accounting firm.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Bob served at Cardinal Health in a number of senior roles. Most recently, as Vice President of Customer Development, Bob led sales, marketing, pricing, and customer programs for its generic pharmaceutical business. As Vice President of CardinalASSIST/ ReadyScan, Bob directed the repackaging and automated pharmaceutical replenishment business. He also served as director of corporate development managing the acquisition process for potential and completed mergers. His accounting training also enabled him to serve as director of corporate finance.
Before entering the healthcare distribution industry, Bob held financial analyst and consulting roles with the BFGoodrich Company and Ernst & Young. Bob earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from The

Ed Bissler
Corporate Vice President Sales
Ed Bissler is Corporate Vice President Sales. He came to H. D. Smith from McKesson Corporation in August 2011, where he most recently directed the strategic sales and service functions for many of the company’s national accounts.
As Corporate Vice President Sales, Ed is responsible for overseeing the Company’s overall sales function and implementing the strategic direction of the sales team as the Company expands into new growth sectors.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Ed served as Vice President of Strategic Solutions in Retail National Accounts at the McKesson Corporation. In that position, he ensured the retention and customer satisfaction of some of McKesson’s largest pharmacy customers. Before his role in national accounts, Ed served in positions of increasing responsibility at McKesson, beginning as a Hospital Account Manager and working his way up to a Regional Manager role.
Ed earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Kent State University. He is trained as a Six Sigma Greenbelt.

Karen Callaway
Corporate Vice President Human Resources
As Corporate Vice President Human Resources, Karen Callaway plays a key role in H. D. Smith’s corporate strategic planning, translating those plans into tangible recruitment and professional development practices. Callaway provides overall strategic Human Resources leadership to H. D. Smith including performance management, organizational development, associate communication, compensation and benefits.
Cultivated over 30 years experience in human resources, recruitment, public relations and marketing, Callaway possesses a strong background in strategic development of comprehensive human resources programs that embrace organizational development and positioning for future growth. She joined H. D. Smith in 2004 and most recently served as Director Human Resources. During her time at H. D. Smith, Callaway’s experience includes sharpening the Company’s recruiting, training and development practices while enhancing efficiencies and compliance endeavors.
Prior to joining H. D. Smith, Callaway held senior level Human Resources positions for various companies within the hospitality and healthcare industries wherein she was responsible for overseeing all human resources activities including employee relations, benefit administration, succession planning, legal compliance and more.

Mark de Bruin
Corporate Vice President Managed Care
Mark de Bruin is Corporate Vice President Managed Care. He brings to H. D. Smith 29 years applied pharmacy and managed care experience, his senior and strategic-level pharmacy benefits management, marketing and business development leadership. In this role, Mark is responsible for the Company’s Third Party Network, creating and maintaining an alliance of prescription and healthcare service providers focusing on initiatives to support quality patient outcomes, provider reimbursement and achieve sales and profit goals.
H. D. Smith’s Third Party Network acts as liaison between pharmacies and healthcare plans, demonstrating strength in numbers and negotiating comprehensive rates and services for customers. The Third Party Network empowers community pharmacies by providing services and support enabling these small-to-mid-sized pharmacies to stay competitive in the rapidly changing healthcare marketplace.
An expert in managed-care services, Mark most recently served as Chief Executive Officer at Asteres, Inc, providing patented automated technology solutions to retail pharmacies, grocery stores, hospitals and the military. An impressive resume with increasing responsibility within retail pharmacy and managed care precedes; former employers and roles include Rite Aid Corporation where Mark served as Executive Vice President, Pharmacy; Albertsons/American Stores serving as Vice President, Pharmacy & Managed Care; and RxAmerica/American Stores serving as President and General Manager.

Bob Dynek
Corporate Vice President Purchasing and Trade Relations
Bob Dynek is Corporate Vice President of Purchasing and Trade Relations at H. D. Smith, serving as the senior executive in charge of purchasing and managing inventory service levels across all business segments and providing ongoing customer support. Bob has more than 25 years of experience working in pharmaceutical purchasing and vendor relations for H. D. Smith, General Drug Company, Foxmeyer Corporation and Louis Zahn Drug Company.
Bob joined H. D. Smith in 1998 serving as director of vendor relations and manager of vendor relations and programs. During his time at H. D. Smith, Bob’s experience has included oversight and category management for the brand pharmaceuticals business segment, as well as day-to-day inventory management for the brand and generic pharmaceuticals business segments, representing over 95 percent of total company sales.
He received his Bachelor of Science in Commerce from DePaul University.

Smith, Christian held roles of increasing responsibility at Bindley Western, first as Division Sales Manager and then as National Director of Retail Sales. Smith in 2010 as Director Brand Pharmaceuticals.

Scott Wilson

Scott Wilson oversees large scale data enhancement programs to assist the H. D. Smith in creating and implementing accurate and efficient processes.
Scott joined H. D. Smith in August 2006 as Vice President Drug Divisions, during which he provided corporate support for each H. D. Smith distribution center in the areas of purchasing, inventory, sales, marketing and budget management.
Scott leverages more than 20 years of leadership experience at the vice president, general manager and director levels. In his prior wholesale business experience he held a leadership role in the integration of 2 merged Fortune 200 companies. He earned a B.A.A. in Accounting from East Tennessee State University and served in the United States Air Force.
